Contrary to common perception, drag queens are performers, not [necessarily] transvestite or transgender. Generally men, they are artists who do female impersonation as a means of self expression. While drag is their artistic medium, it has expanded to become a subculture of its own. Performances have a humorous overtone and satirical comment on society and gender roles. For several months I followed The House of Gunt, a group of drag queens based in Savannah, GA who perform weekly at bars, events, and shows in the South.
